A2P 10DLC registration guide (2026): brand, campaign & approval

If you send business text messages to US numbers from a normal 10-digit phone number, you need A2P 10DLC registration. Skip it and carriers will filter or block most of your messages. This guide explains what it is in plain English, the difference between a brand and a campaign, how to register step by step, and why campaigns get rejected, so yours does not.

What is A2P 10DLC?

A2P stands for application-to-person, messages sent by software rather than typed by a person. 10DLC means a standard 10-digit long code, an ordinary local phone number. US carriers require businesses that send A2P SMS from a 10DLC to register through The Campaign Registry (TCR). Registration tells carriers who is sending, what kind of messages, and that recipients agreed to receive them. In return you get better deliverability and higher throughput.

Do I actually need it?

Yes, if you send application-to-person SMS to US numbers from a 10-digit long code, which covers appointment reminders, notifications, alerts, and bulk campaigns sent through a platform like Twilio. Unregistered traffic is aggressively filtered, and unregistered senders face steep carrier fees or outright blocking. Registration is not optional for real business messaging.

Brand vs campaign: the two things you register

People get stuck here, so keep it simple. You register two separate things:

Step by step: how to register

  1. Register your brand. Enter your exact legal business name, address, EIN, and website. Accuracy matters, mismatches with public records slow vetting.
  2. Pick a brand type. Standard (with an EIN) unlocks higher throughput and trust; sole proprietor is available for very small senders without an EIN, with lower limits.
  3. Create a campaign. Choose the use case that truly matches your messages. Do not label marketing as customer care, reviewers check.
  4. Add sample messages. Provide realistic examples that match your actual sends, including your business name and opt-out instructions (for example, reply STOP to unsubscribe).
  5. Describe opt-in. Explain exactly how recipients consented, a web form, a checkbox, a keyword, and make sure it matches the call-to-action you reference.
  6. Submit and wait for vetting. Carriers review the campaign and assign throughput.
Doing this through Twilio? Twilio walks you through brand and campaign registration in its console. If you would rather hand it off, our team can register your A2P 10DLC campaign for you. See also our bulk SMS feature.

How long does it take?

Brand registration is often near-instant to about a day. Standard campaign vetting usually takes a few business days, though certain use cases take longer. Plan for a week to be safe, and do not schedule a big send before your campaign is approved.

Common rejection reasons (and how to avoid them)

ReasonFix
Opt-in or call-to-action does not match sample messagesDescribe the exact place and wording where people consent, and make samples reflect it.
Missing opt-out languageInclude opt-out instructions (reply STOP) in at least one sample message.
Business name or website mismatchUse the exact legal name and a live website that matches the brand.
Use case labeled wrongPick the use case that truly matches, do not disguise marketing as notifications.
Prohibited contentAvoid restricted categories (certain financial, gambling, or controlled-substance content).

After approval

Once your campaign is approved, associate your Twilio number with it and start sending within the allowed throughput. Keep honoring opt-outs and keep your samples accurate, if what you send drifts from what you registered, deliverability suffers. For the official details, see Twilio’s A2P 10DLC documentation.
